In the canon line, this is a great camera: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/canon_s5is.html

I hade an earlier model and the camera takes very SLR feeling shots. The zoom is also going to be fun and offer a lot of creative potential after the short zoom on the elph.

the camera is already out in the next 2 models, reviewed here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08091703canon_sx1is_sx10is.asp

all of the above models offer many auto shooting/scene modes, macro mode, and also the option of shooting in manual mode or aperture or shutter priority modes.

Hi Carrie;

I've always had Canon cameras and been very happy. I wanted to upgrade last year to an SLR camara and I was looking at a Canon Rebel (which I've heard is fabulous). But after looking at several different things I decided the SLR cameras are just too big to carry around as much as I do. I opted for a Canon S5 1S which is probably outdated already but it's great and I'm sure what ever model came after it is even better. It's 8 mega pixels with 12 times optical zoom. It does have an automatic setting but also a manual one for apeture etc. (And also some really neat picture effects too) Here's an example of one of the picture effects where you can isolate one colour.

Also even on automatic I've been able to get pretty good moving shots.

It's a fun camera though I usually use it on automatic. Good Luck~1

I did get the SLR and I just love it... You are right it is a bit big to take all over the place that is why I didnt get rid of my old point and shoot (canon elf). I would down load a picture or two but I am at work and dont have them in this computer. I will post them later for you too see... I did play with some on the computer in PSE6. but not to much on some... LOL.,,, But who can help them selfs when it comes to that.

I love that effect of isolating one color! I have never seen that before. Your camera can do that itself? Awesome!
