I am seriously stuck trying to understand the basics of Iphoto.......the difference between "Events" and "Photos" Also....if I want to delete a event??

Reply to This

I LOVE Events!! And for us scrappers it is REALLY handy. Here's why...

Events is a way to clump photos from one particular 'event' or occasion or photo session in one place. You can still view all the photos in your library by clicking 'photos'. You can delete and event just as you can delete and album and it will retain the photos in the library (iTunes works this way too, delete a playlist, songs still remain in the library). Look at albums, event and playlists like aliases to the original files.

For scrappers this is great news because not only can you go to a particular event to scrap but then you can add a jpg of the completed LO to iPhoto and add it to the event and make it the key photo. When you scroll through your events it is gorgeous and organized. You can even redate the LO to match the actual event. You will know what you scrapped and wht you still need to scrap. And keyword the whole thing!

Oh my gosh..I get it! I am starting to see it now....so Photos in Iphotos are all photos and Events can be broken down...for example I uploaded some photos from my Brother birthday party so I can create a Folder in the Event and Call it Larry's Birthday....

It will also remain in my "My Pictures" Folder too.....

You got it. You can go back and 'event' your imported pics. going forward you can 'event' them automatically at import. Import some and you will see what I mean.

If you are on any CTs it is helpful too, not events, but creating an album and keywords. I have an album for all LOs. I use a keyword for each CT, (CT Miki Ferkul, CT Saxon Holt, etc) I KW each LO. This makes it so easy to see what you have done for each CT.

I do this for travel, holidays, etc for all my photos.

Yea, events is awesome because you can categorize your photos. I love events! LOL

Hi Kayla, I tried watching your video (above) and the sound went out and the video froze. Were you using iPhoto 09? I tried going to Window and clicking on Keywords and I did not have it and I have iPhoto 08.

I am taking one on one lessons with Apple and my instructor suggested I get iPhoto 09 if for nothing else bu the editing features. I bought it, but have not installed it yet. He also suggested I use iPhoto to keep my digital scrapbooking supplies instead of inside folders.

I now have PSE 6.0 on my Mac as well as the PSE 4.0. I really want to learn PSE 6, but have not had much luck. I do so much better with instruction instead of trying to "braile" my way through all the various tutorials and kind of "hunt and peck" through various tutorials, blogs etc.

I watched your basics tutorial in Newbies 101 and really enjoyed that. I may have to watch it a few more times to actually, hopefully, finally do a lay out. Heck, I would be happy just getting a photo in a quick page!!

When you refer to these various websites, would you please put the link in so I know how to get there?

You are so wonderful to have such a great site...thank you so much.

Hi Donna! I was using iPhoto 08. iPhoto has some great editing options! In iPhoto 09 you will also love the "Faces" feature for recognizing family members in your photos - for that it is more than worth the upgrade price. I haven't used it for digital elements but it could be used for that! I would probably recommend Shoebox or something similar. Personally I am waiting until ACDSee comes out for MAC in the spring/summer/fall to organize my digital stash!

I am glad you enjoyed the tutorials - honestly when I watch video tutorials I watch them about three times to really absorb things -and I often pause them and do what they say and then restart to move on to the next technique - it is just how I learn!

I will work on the links - also expect some great tutorials on iPhoto around the site this year - they will work better than the above!

Thanks for your kind comments - you made my day!

PS the "Window" I click in the video is on the top of your menu bar for the application - hopefully that makes sense...

Hi Kayla,

Your iPhoto video cut out and stopped just as you got to keywords. Bummer.

I am taking one on one lessons from Apple weekly and I am learning alot about iPhoto. I have been considering using my iPhoto 09 for my Digital Scrapbooking Supplies (ie Papers, Quick Pages, Ribbons etc) I am thinking of making my pages 8.5 x 11 so they will fit into the hardbound books I can order from Apple. I think you can get 20 pages for $30.

I am working on a book for a special occasion. I am also considering sizing my lay out pages to 5 x 7 or 8 x 8 as my daughters don't like taking up alot of wall space with the 12 x 12 size.

Our Digital Scrapfesting group meet last weekend and we all purchased the book DIGITAL & HYBRID SCAPBOOKING AND CARD-MAKING by Patty Debowski. It comes wit a CD of supplies. We went through it together and using PSE6 I was able to do my first page!! The book is GREAT!

I recently bought the Wacom Bamboo Drawing Pad and am getting my first lesson on it from my Apple one on one tomorrow. I saw your post about the Bamboo Pad and all th scrapbooking supplies and info with it. Can I buy the scrapbooking stuff separately??? I had no idea there had such a package. Would you please let me know by emailing me at donnabcrafty2602@yahoo.com? When I purchased the Bamboo Pad at Apple it was $99 and I got the Pad, Mouse, Pen, Pen Stand, USB Cable, Quick Start Guide, Installation CD (electronic user manual and tablet driver) PSE6, Corel Painter Essentials 4 and Nik Color Efex Pro.

I want to blog too and your tutorial was very helpful. I will try it.

Thank you as always for all your efforts and wealth of information!

Donna B.

Thank you for being here! The great thing about digital is that you can size your layouts to be whatever size you would like - it really gives you a LOT of freedom! Patty's book is great. It really is a fabulous resource.

You could use iPhoto to organize your supplies - although personally if I were going to use software to organize both my photos and digital supplies in one place I would use Aperture. ACDSee is also coming out with Pro for Mac soon - which will be another fabulous option. You could also checkout Shoebox - I know they have a wonderful class showing how to use it to organize your supplies on JesssicaSprague.com.

Good luck - can't wait to see your blog!

Hi, I personally like the Finder system for my supplies. I don't like iPhoto for that. I also have iPhoto 8. (I tried going to Window and clicking on Keywords and I did not have it and I have iPhoto 08.) The KWs are under 'Window'>Show Keywords or Command K (Apple key +K).

I also think that iPhoto 8 is fine for some rough edits and then I like to do the rest of the editing and the LO of course, in PS.

I also got the Bamboo but have not gotten used to the stylus yet!

You may want to set all of your jpg and png files to open in PSE:

Also in iPhoto open your photo directly into PSE:

Donna B - you are one gutsy woman! I admire you for jumping in and getting all this done, even a tablet to boot! Go girl! Anxious to see your layouts in the gallery. So glad this site has been of value to you. I think it's INVALUABLE!

Hi Kayla,

I tried to watch your keyword video and it stops playing and stops buffering very shortly after it starts. I am desperate to learn keywording short cuts for a bunch of slides I just scanned, and was so hoping your video would be what I was looking for. I noticed two members above mentioned this to you in their comments, but when you replied you didn't address the issue. Is there a way to fix this? I desperately want to watch this video NOW!! LOLOL... sorry but I'm so sick of keywording the same words under each individual photo! Help!! Thanks!!
