Digital Scrapbooking 101

by Kayla Lamoreaux

Last year I shared this post about a favorite gifting tradition for our family. Per a request from a member, I am reposting it here. Hope you enjoy! Happy Apple Season! :)

This idea is old - but good - and a little fun if you like clouds… It is a little fun family tradition I learned years ago from a bulletin board - last year my husband got me a camp stove so I could make these outside - the kids have fun with it and it is very good.

Take your average can of sweetened condensed milk - and you remove the label. Fill a large saucepan with the number of cans you want to make - I do about 20 at a time in a large spaghetti pot - the trick is to fit the cans in and still be able to have them covered with water.

Basically you bring the water and cans to a boil and then keep them boiling (you will have to add water during the process) for three hours straight. I know it sounds crazy - but what you are left with when done is a can of caramel dip - people always ask me how I did it - because it looks like you went to the trouble of canning caramel yourself - that is always fun!

So how does this relate to digital scrapbooking? Well - I created a custom label using Katie Pertiet’s Storytime Kit - measuring the old label off of the can to create a template… I just layered them on and then printed them off two to a letter size sheet - it was very easy - and just one more way I can justify all those digital papers and kits I have stashed away on my computer….

We usually present the gift with a few apples in a gift bag - I think one of my children's favorite traditions is delivering gifts to friends and neighbors - we have a lot of fun with it.

Hope you enjoy the idea - be sure to refrigerate the cans after making them - just in case!

a great way to eat this delicious caramel is to spread cream cheese on a plate or platter, cover with the caramel and chopped up chocolate Heath/Skor bars. Cut apples into 1/8ths slices and use as scoops! A "healthy" fun treat! :)

Just a little hint Paula do not forget you are doing this as the can can exlpode & trust me it takes forever to clean caramel of the walls ceiling etc. I make banana cream caramel pie/tart this way, & once I completely forgot that I was making it till the can expoded. Although Kaylas way of doing it outside sounds like fun also easier to clean if accidents happen. Now Nestl'e make the caramel in a can on its own I have noticed on supermarket shelves. Like Kaylas idea for gift giving though.
